Great Homeschooling Book!

I just finished Sonya Haskins’ book, Homeschooling for the Rest of Us Homeschooling for the Rest of Us, Sonya Haskins, 978-0-7642-0739-6 and it was wonderful. It’s a very easy book to read, she gets straight to the point so it’s not wasting your time telling you the same stuff over and over, just in a different way.

What I like most about it was it lived up to it’s name. This book truly speaks to the majority of us as homeschoolers. We all have days that things don’t go smoothly but if we are truly honest we have many more than we’d like to admit. This book helped me realize, I’m not alone, there truly are other mom’s out there who worry that they’re not doing everything to help their children. And it convinced me that I can’t do EVERYTHING I want to do.

There were several chapters that spoke to me but two of my favorites were chapters 3 and 6. Chapter 3, Developing Positive Relationships, was a real eye opener. My 10 year old is growing up so fast and I want to be sure our relationship is prepared for the years that we’re about to face. We are so much alike and we bump heads OFTEN. I really am trying to start overlooking more things and start building him up and praising him for the good. He has so many great qualities and I seem to get stuck on his not so great qualities (because I have the same ones and I don’t want him to be like me,lol). But if I’m not careful I’ll push him away.

Chapter 6 is all about extra curricular activities. We don’t do alot of those and at times I’ve felt guilty about it. But honestly my kids don’t want to be busy every day/night of the week, and my husband refuses to allow us to get caught up in the rat race that so many families are in these days. We 3 regular evening activities each week, AWANA’s, Campus Life Bible study club, Wednesday night church. That’s enough for my family and this author agreed. We also pick and choose other activities/field trips to attend when we want to.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, new or old, to homeschooling.

Thanks for posting about this book.
I have Sonya's other book: The Homeschooler's Book of Lists which is very useful. I didn't know about this other book; I'll keep an eye out for it. :)
