Jane Austen Challenge

jane-austen[5]Last January I took the Jane Austen Challenge to read all of her books in 2011, knowing that I might quite possibly only read half (or even less).  But still I thought this was a more obtainable goal for me (compared to the other challenges to read 52 books in a year!). So here we are six months later and I’m finally getting around to checking in with this challenge.

So far I’ve read Sense and Sensibility. This was very good, as you might expect. I enjoyed it very much. I love the two main characters and the fact that they were such opposites, unlike the sisters in Pride and Prejudice.

Speaking of Pride and Prejudice, that was next on my short list. It was a very good book, and did not disappoint. I’m currently watching the 1980’s version of the movie. Very good adaptation, in my opinion.

And lastly I read Persuasion. Again, this was a good story, however none of Jane Austen’s books are too suspenseful and after reading one or two you tend to see where things are going even if you’re not exactly sure how they’ll get there. And with that thought in mind, I have decided to put this challenge on the shelf for a bit. There are a couple of books on hold for me at the library and I want to be sure I’m ‘available’ to read them when they come in.

The challenge actually included ALL things Austen, meaning any books or movies about her. I have watched EMMA, Loved, Loved, Loved it. And when I finish Pride and Prejudice I have Persuasion waiting to be watched. I also have a shorter version of Pride and Prejudice that I’m planning to watch and once I’ve watched all of these, I’m going to get my hands on the Kiera Knightly version of P&P. I should be all Austened out by then.

I have not done an Austen Challenge update. Maybe I should. I checked out a couple of books from the library that were written by Austen fans and present a "what happened after" or "what if this had happened". My favorite "Austen" movie is 'Lost in Austen". I'm planning on watching it again as part of the challenge. Maybe I should go blog about my progress with Jane Austen Challenge?

Oh! I did an Austen Challenge one year! It was fabulous. I read them all back to back! It was very fun! I just happened to watch the Pride and Prejudice 1940's movie on youtube last night. I didn't know there were several versions that were older than the 1990's.

I look forward to getting to know you in blog land. I followed you too! Thanks for dropping bye. I saw your comment and my follow button is at the very bottom of my website.

I'm almost done with Mansfield Park. I'm not doing this challenge, but I have read Emma, S&S, and P&p though not this year. I just watched the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma. It was ok. The BBC P&P with Colin Firth is the best! I own it, which reminds me... I've never read Persuasion or Northanger Abbey. I doubt that I'll tackle them this year though. There are some fun fiction books that use Jane Austen as the sleuth. I enjoyed those. I can't remember the author at the moment, but ask me if you're interested and I can look it up.

My, that is a challenge. Good for you! I should pick an author and try that!

I liked "Lost in Austen," too. It was on Netflix Instant for a while. We just watched the Kiera Knightly version of P & P (hubby and I), and it was AWESOME! Even Hubby loved it!! "Sense and Sensibility" came the other day while he was on shift work, so he didn't watch it with me, and while it was good, it was more "gentle" (simple? predictable?) and thus not quite as good as that version of P & P.

I am not doing the challenge, myself, but a friend's daughter, whom I homeschooled for a few months at the end of this school year, decided to read P & P, so I've been watching the movies to support her efforts.

I think this is an awesome challenge. I am a pretty big Austen fan, so this sounds like fun to me.
